The Best Vegan Chocolate Buttercream Frosting

A simple but rich and delicious chocolate frosting for any cake, cupcake, or other use.

  • 1 cup Earth Balance original
  • 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2/3 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3-4 tbsp any mild flavored plant-based milk


  1. In a large mixing bowl and using either regular hand mixer or a stand mixer, cream together the Earth Balance and powdered sugar.

  2. Add the remaining ingredients and mix on medium speed until creamy. Try not to overbeat, the frosting will eventually begin to separate.

  3. Use immediately on completely cooled baked goods or keep covered in an air-tight container in the fridge for up to three days.

Recipe Notes

I use So Delicious Unsweetened Coconut Milk for most recipes because it's smooth and creamy but mostly flavorless. Soy, almond, or any other plant-based milk works here, too.
