Tempeh Bacon with Guacamole

Tempeh Bacon

  • 3 tbsp maple syrup
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 1/2 tbsp liquid smoke
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 to 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • pinch cayenne
  • 12 oz tempeh sliced thin
  • oil for sauteeing optional


  • 3 avocados, pitted and mashed
  • 1/4 cup good salsa
  • 1 tbsp lime juice
  • 1/4 cup chopped cilantro (more or less, as desired)


Tempeh Bacon

  1. In a bowl, mix together the maple syrup, soy sauce, liquid smoke, salt, pepper, paprika, and cayenne. 

  2. Slice the tempeh as thin as possible without it falling apart. Place in a bowl.

  3. Pour the marinade over and make sure all the tempeh is covered. Let stand for an hour or so or overnight. 

  4. Saute in a nonstick pan with or without added oil. 

  5. *or Bake in 400 degrees F oven for 15 minutes or until browned. 


  1. Slice the avocados in half, remove the pits, and scrape the avocado flesh into a bowl.

  2. Add the remaining ingredients and mash together with a fork, 

  3. Add a few dollops of sriracha sauce to the guacamole, if desired.
