The Real Story of Cinco de Mayo

This holiday is usually thought of as Mexican independence day, This is inaccurate. The day actually commemorates a battle between Mexico and France, Spain, and England. Mexico owed the three countries money and the three countries attacked Mexico. Mexico won the battle, which is known as the Battle of Puebla. Their victory was short-lived, however, and France returned less than a year later and conquered the country. Cinco de Mayo has become less about a specific battle and more about celebrating Mexican identity and culture.
