Pummelo (Pomelo) Citrus Salad Vegan Plant-Based Recipe
This salad uses the yummy and unusual Pummelo (or Pomelo). It’s a non-hybrid, old fashioned, delicious fruit that’s making a comeback.
Using mostly citrus fruit, this pummelo salad is delicious and made in large part with things I found on sale last night. I could have called it, “On Sale Salad.”
Or, I could have called it Pummelo Salad. The pummelo was the only thing not on sale for a fantastic price.
Pummelo or Pomelo?
“You say Pummelo, I say Pomelo.” It’s correct either way.
However you say it, it’s the head-sized grapefruit thing you may find in your produce section right now.
It’s the largest citrus fruit, known as Citrus maxima or Citrus grandis. Which I think is Latin for “Head-Sized Grapefruit.”
Anyway, Wikipedia says:
“The pomelo, Citrus maxima or Citrus grandis, is the largest citrus fruit from the Rutaceae family. It is a natural (non-hybrid) citrus fruit, similar in appearance to a large grapefruit, native to South and Southeast Asia. The pomelo is one of the original citrus species from which the rest of cultivated citrus hybridized. The popular fruit is used in many Chinese festive celebrations throughout Southeast Asia.”
It’s actually been around for a long time. Check out this old art print from 1885. The Pummelo or Pomelo fell out of favor in the US and has been revived in the last decade or so and is grown in Florida.
Even though it’s freezing in many parts of the US, it’s a great time to get good deals on produce. The Pummelo was $2.49, which isn’t bad for an exotic sort of item. A big bag of grapefruit was $2.99, the avocados $.68, mangos (not used here) were also $.68, and so on. Even if it’s snowing out your backdoor there are places in the world producing beautiful, tasty fruits and vegetables.
The blackberries were an amazing $1.99 for 12 oz.
Delicious Pummelo Salad
This salad using all that yummy, priced right produce was perfect for a light dinner and took just a few minutes to make.
In fact, it’s so easy I don’t even know if it can be called a recipe. The dressing is a very simple one with grapefruit juice and a little bit of tahini.
Each of the ingredients is crazy healthy on their own and together add up to superfood level nutritional.
Pummelo (Pomelo) Citrus Salad
This salad uses the yummy and unusual Pummelo (or Pomelo). It's a non-hybrid, old fashioned, delicious fruit that's making a comeback.
- 1/2 cup sectioned and peeled pummelo flesh
- 1/2 cup mandarin orange sections
- 1/2 cup blackberries
- 1/2 cup avocado slices
- 1/4 cup sliced green onions
- 3 cups salad mix
- 1/4 cup grapefruit juice
- 2 tbsp tahini
- 1 tsp balsamic vinegar
- 1/2 tsp salt or to taste
- 1/2 tsp black pepper or to taste
- 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes or to taste
- stevia to taste optional
Prepare the produce and assemble the salad.
Whisk together the dressing ingredients until well mixed. Taste and adjust seasoning. Serve over salad.
That’s it. Just fresh, juicy fruit and greens. It really is so simple but so delicious and lovely to look at, too.
