Chocolate is the perfect pick me up and I like to have it early in the day. It’s a stimulant, but has very little caffeine, though, if any. What makes chocolate, also known as cacao, a stimulant is the Theobromine, a milder and less aggressive cousin of caffeine.

Theobromine affects smooth muscle, which is why it can cause heart palpitations and has a laxative effect for some. Shh <— I kind of whispered that last part … Chocolate doesn’t affect the central nervous system nearly as much as caffeine, so can be less likely to cause anxiety.

Chocolate, meaning whole cacao beans or cocoa powder (cacao with the cocao butter removed) has a ton of nutrition in it. Like mucho antioxidants. It’s loaded with magnesium, too, which is essential for bone health, and has a surprising amount of both fiber and protein.

Chia Seeds Are Awesome, Too

Chia seeds are also fantastic for health. They’re full of fiber, antioxidants, have a good deal of protein, are high in Omega-3 fatty acids, protein, calcium, and magnesium. So they’re not just good for cardiovascular health but are supportive of bone health, too. They’re pretty tasty, too.

Chia seed trivia … Chia seeds are hydrophilic. That’s why they go all gel-like in water. They have little microscopic hairs all over them that attract water molecules. The exterior hairs can absorb nine times their own weight in water. So chia can be hydrating, as well, when those hairs are full of water.

Hemp Seed for Protein and Omega-3s

I’ve used a bit of hemp seed in this smoothie as well. To be honest, because it tastes so good. An added benefit is that it’s high in protein and omega-3s.

Pistachios are Beautiful

In my opinion, pistachios are one of the most beautiful foods. The magenta pink against the green is my favorite color combination. My boyfriend is red-green colorblind and so has never seen this awesome contrast.

Blueberries are Lovely, Too

Blueberries always inspire me to paint something. The colors are lovely and their shape is gorgeous.

Blueberries are also full of good things, like some powerful antioxidants and all the other lovely compounds located mainly in their beautiful blue skin.

On to the recipe. It’s so easy. It will take less time to make than it did to read this post. Well, depending on how fast you read. But it only takes a few minutes to throw this together.

Blend it as long or short as you like. Longer blending will make a creamier smoothie, shorter leaves it a little chunky and chewable. Adjust the thickness as well by how much plant milk you use.

 

Chocolate Chia Super Smoothie

Ingredients

  • 1 cup coconut or almond milk
  • 1 large banana, frozen
  • 2 tbsp cacao powder, or cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup frozen blueberries
  • 2 tbsp chia
  • 2 tbsp hemp seeds or hemp hearts
  • 1/8 cup pistachios
  • pinch salt
  • 6 ice cubes
  • stevia optional

Instructions

  1. Place all ingredients in a high-speed blender and process until very smooth. 

    Top with a few cacao nibs and pistachios, if desired. 

Recipe Notes

This makes a thick smoothie. If you'd like it thinner, just add more plant milk or water. If you'd like thicker, more like ice cream, just add less.
