Happy 2019! I hope you’ve had a great year and that it ended on a high note.
I’ve decked the halls, jingled the bells, and rung in the New Year. It’s been a great ‘nuther go around the sun and also difficult at times. Like most years, I’ve come to the end of it having learned a lot.
I’ve loved hard and done well and also grieved and had losses. My dad is getting up there in years and is not doing all that well, so I’ve had to face his inevitable decline. My sister, Susan, died unexpectedly two years ago, and that’s a loss that never stops hurting.
The last time I saw her was New Year’s Eve, 2016. We went out that evening and danced and laughed and I hugged her and kissed the top of her head and told her I loved her. One of the last things I remember her saying is, “OMG, Lisa, stop hugging me, you’re making me all sweaty!”
Ten days later, at age 48, she died suddenly for reasons we still don’t understand.
It be that way sometime.
I’ve allowed myself to be loved in ways I didn’t think possible with a level of devotion and even adoration that I’ve longed for. I’ve been gloriously happy this past year in so many ways and have done things I thought I might not get a chance to do again.
It be that way sometime, too.
Start Fresh for a Healthy Happy New Year!
I dunno about you, but over the holidays I ate mucho grande sugar and oil and gluten-free bread. I overindulged on a whole bunch of yummy vegan restaurant food. And chocolate. And cupcakes. OMG … Way too many cupcakes.
I’m so ready for a fresh start. A great big push of the ole reset button. I need to reboot.
Are you with me on this?
I’m committing to 60 days sugar and oil-free, whole food vegan. My recipes here will reflect that. But, don’t fret, they’ll also be delicious.
According to The Vegan Society, the definition of vegan is thus:
Vegan is an ethical decision to refrain from exploitation of animals, including other humans. This is awesome. Vegan cupcakes are also awesome.
All the recipes on Planted365 are vegan, so this won’t change for the next 60 days. Our recipes will always exclude all animal products, including meats, dairy, eggs, and honey. Any products recommended here, food and otherwise, will also exclude those products.
Plant-Based is different from
Why not indeed. I’m ethically vegan and have been for 11 years now. Vegan cupcakes, tho.
I feel much better when I stick to a mainly whole-food diet. Which I do sporadically. For the next 60 days, I’ll be both vegan and whole-food/plant-based.
Oh, sugar. You delicious minx. I do love you. I really do. You make my brain light up like a Christmas tree that still needs to be taken down. You’re so good. But so bad for me.
Seriously. Refined sugar wreaks all kinds of havoc on the brain and affects appetite, cognition, inflammation, and just about everything. So, no sugar.
Here is a list of some of the forms of refined sugar I’ll be excluding from my recipes for the next couple of months.
I will be including plenty of deliciously sweet fruit and also stevia and monk fruit, although sparingly.
Oils are heavily refined and have little to no nutritional value other than as very dense calories. So, no to oils but yes to healthy plant fats like avocados and nuts.
I’ll be experimenting with using water and broth to saute vegetables and trying pan roasting/toasting for things like tempeh and so on.
Like oil, flours are heavily refined calorie bombs.
That said, the food at Planted365 will still be tasty, easy to make, and will use ingredients available at most local groceries.
That’s what’s in store.
I wish you all the best and look forward to what the new year brings. Here’s to good vegan food, more yoga, some Zumba and dance, and lots of love and happiness.
